Geoff Pynn

Hi. I'm Geoff Pynn, and I teach philosophy.

I work at Northern Illinois University. My research centers on epistemology; in particular, on assertion, contextualism, and social epistemology. I also teach early modern European philosophy, logic, and philosophy of religion. In addition, I'm interested in philosophical problems concerning addiction, anarchy, conspiracy theories, feminism, moral panics, prisons, and more.

From 2011-2017, I was the the graduate adviser for NIU's MA program in philosophy. I maintain a list of information about funding opportunities at MA programs in the US and Canada and recently wrote a post for the APA Blog about what to say in your personal statement when applying to doctoral programs.

Wireless Philosophy

I'm an associate director and contributor for Wi-Phi, the internet's prime destination for high-quality educational philosophy videos aimed at the general public. We've recently earned high praise from Open Culture. Check out my latest video in our mini-course on the theory of knowledge, put together by Jennifer Nagel and myself.

Recent publications

Over the last few years my work has primarily been on epistemic contextualism. I'm in the midst of changing gears. My current projects include a paper on epistemic degradation and humiliation, as well as a project on plea bargaining and testimonial injustice.
